Tips to reduce water requirements

We recommend mulching the beds
Experience has shown that by covering the floor with hay or straw, evaporation can be reduced by 80%. If you keep the beds evenly moist, an optimal humid microclimate will be created under the mulch. This not only promotes the growth of plants, but also enormously reduces water consumption. On our farm we only water every 2-3 days and irrigate a 200 m2 cultivation area in the Algarve in Portugal with 500l of water. Our beds are always moist, which promotes plant growth and harvest quality.

It is also advisable to keep the beds moist at all times, even if the bed is not used for a certain period of time
The desiccation of the soil leads to a huge decline in micro-and macro-organisms in the soil, resulting in a barren soil over time. Tests have shown that the water content in the entire bed with full-scale irrigation remains longer than if watering is only carried out selectively. Due to the small volume of the poured surfaces, in contrast to the large dry volume, they dry out faster than if the entire volume of the bed is filled with moisture. Similar to heating in an apartment.

Maintaining an energy level always requires less energy than having to achieve it again and again.

Maca is a biennial cress and medicinal plant from the high altitudes of the Peruvian Andes. Like ginseng, it is said to have strengthening (adaptogenic) properties.
Today it is considered a valued dietary supplement. There are three types of maca: yellow, red and black. The yellow maca variety is the most commonly grown variety and effectively grows best in cooler climates.
Black maca is also called men's maca because it is known to increase male libido and potency as well as physical and mental performance. The black maca tuber is the strongest aphrodisiac compared to the other varieties.
Maca grows particularly well at altitudes between 2000 and 4000 m, in arid, dry climates. Cultivation at lower altitudes is also possible. In very hot summers, Peruvian cress does not thrive so well and blooms quickly and only forms very small tubers.

Planting information
Maca is ideally sown and cultivated at temperatures below 15°C. In cooler northern regions, sowing takes place from March to April. Cultivation is not recommended in wine-growing climates or in areas with hot summers. Dry wintering in an unheated greenhouse is possible. It is robust, frost hardy and germinates quickly within a few days. Light germinator, just press the seeds on. Since pricking out maca seedlings is unfavorable, they are sown directly on the spot in pots, plates or beds. Even after sowing and throughout the entire growth phase, the subsoil should be kept cool and moist. Avoid waterlogging, rather let it stand a little dry.
Thrives best in relatively dry and well-drained loamy soil.
