Tips to reduce water use

We recommend mulching the beds.
Experience has shown that covering the ground with hay or straw can reduce evaporation by 80%. Keeping the beds evenly moist will create an optimal moist microclimate under the mulch. This not only helps the plants to grow, but also reduces the water consumption enormously. On our farm we only water every 2-3 days and irrigate a 200 m2 cultivation area in the Algarve in Portugal with 500l of water. Our beds are always moist, which promotes plant growth and crop quality.

It is also advisable to keep the beds moist at all times.
Even if the bed is not used for a certain period of time. Drying out the soil causes a huge reduction in the micro- and macro-organisms in the soil, resulting in an infertile soil.
Tests have shown that the addition of water to the entire bed is lower over a longer period of time than if it is only poured selectively. Due to the small volume of the poured areas, as opposed to the large dry volume, they dry out faster than if the entire volume of the bed were filled with moisture.
Similar to heating in an apartment.

Maintaining an energy level always requires less energy than having to reach this level again and again.

The 'Fantic' leek is a biennial onion and medicinal plant. It comes from field garlic [Allium ampeloprasum], which is native to the Mediterranean region and was known and used there more than 2000 years before our era. This variety grows evenly, is hardy and healthy, with dark green foliage and good peelability. The taste is full-bodied and strong.

Subtropical climate (Mediterranean) (e.g. Portugal, Spain, Italy)
Sow directly or pre-cultivate from September to October when temperatures start to drop.

Temperate climate (e.g. Germany, Switzerland, Poland)
Sow directly into frost-free open ground or pre-cultivate from April to June.
We recommend pre-cultivation in small boxes from March.

Generally
Sow or plant leek seedlings like radishes in rows. We always recommend pre-cultivation by allowing the seedlings to grow to a height of 20 cm in a small bowl. To stimulate growth, place the plants at the same height as the bulb and shorten them by 1/3 at the roots and leaf tips shortly before planting.
Leek prefers a location in full sun with sufficient water and nutrient-rich, humus-rich soil. Prepare the soil for leeks with seasoned animal manure. Avoid waterlogging.

Extra tips
For a longer harvest period, care should be taken not to injure the heart during harvesting. Leeks generally prefer cooler, humid climates. An additional incorporation of biochar and primary rock powder into the soil is recommended in order to obtain a fine, crumbly and permeable soil.

Type of propagation
It spreads via seeds.

Plant care
The bed in which the leek grows should never dry out completely; regular watering is necessary to keep the growth of the plants stable. Due to the initially slow growth of the plants, we recommend weeding surrounding herbs regularly. Beds prepared with animal manure and planting in mixed culture replace additional fertilizer.
