Tips to reduce water use

We recommend mulching the beds.
Experience has shown that covering the ground with hay or straw can reduce evaporation by 80%. Keeping the beds evenly moist will create an optimal moist microclimate under the mulch. This not only helps the plants to grow, but also reduces the water consumption enormously. On our farm we only water every 2-3 days and irrigate a 200 m2 cultivation area in the Algarve in Portugal with 500l of water. Our beds are always moist, which promotes plant growth and crop quality.

It is also advisable to keep the beds moist at all times.
Even if the bed is not used for a certain period of time. Drying out the soil causes a huge reduction in the micro- and macro-organisms in the soil, resulting in an infertile soil.
Tests have shown that the addition of water to the entire bed is lower over a longer period of time than if it is only poured selectively. Due to the small volume of the poured areas, as opposed to the large dry volume, they dry out faster than if the entire volume of the bed were filled with moisture.
Similar to heating in an apartment.

Maintaining an energy level always requires less energy than having to reach this level again and again.

The Rodelika carrot is a biennial root vegetable. It emerged in 1985 through selection from the Rothild variety. Strong-growing, high-yielding variety with strong, dark green foliage. It develops large and long, truncated, smooth-skinned carrots with an intense orange-red color. Very suitable for storage. The variety is characterized by a strong, characteristic carrot taste with a strong aromatic sweetness. Excellently high Brix values, therefore particularly suitable for high-quality juices.
Also suitable for growing on heavy soils.

Planting information
The sowing period begins in early January and ends in July. In principle, year-round sowing is possible in Portugal. At very cold temperatures, there is only a delay in growth, which alone extends the cultivation period. It is advisable to only direct sow, thanks to the simple and uncomplicated germination.
To do this, the seeds are placed 2 cm deep, at a distance of about 2-3 cm, in a groove. Sowing can be done very densely, by separating them later, the small and densely growing young carrots can be harvested early to give others the space they need to grow.
Carrots do not tolerate fresh manure. The ground must be free of stones larger than 3cm. Otherwise, it can cause the roots to grow in different directions, significantly affecting the quality of the harvest.
Since carrots germinate very slowly, other plants must be removed regularly. Occasional loosening of the soil shows good growth results.
