Tips to reduce water use

We recommend mulching the beds.
Experience has shown that covering the ground with hay or straw can reduce evaporation by 80%. Keeping the beds evenly moist will create an optimal moist microclimate under the mulch. This not only helps the plants to grow, but also reduces the water consumption enormously. On our farm we only water every 2-3 days and irrigate a 200 m2 cultivation area in the Algarve in Portugal with 500l of water. Our beds are always moist, which promotes plant growth and crop quality.

It is also advisable to keep the beds moist at all times.
Even if the bed is not used for a certain period of time. Drying out the soil causes a huge reduction in the micro- and macro-organisms in the soil, resulting in an infertile soil.
Tests have shown that the addition of water to the entire bed is lower over a longer period of time than if it is only poured selectively. Due to the small volume of the poured areas, as opposed to the large dry volume, they dry out faster than if the entire volume of the bed were filled with moisture.
Similar to heating in an apartment.

The fennel root Fino is an annual, very bolt-resistant, fast-growing year-round and high-yielding variety. It has large, firm, pure white bulbs that are flat, round and very tender, not becoming woody.
Fine, sweet aroma. It tastes pleasantly mildly and is also ideal as a raw food.

The fennel root is originally native to the Mediterranean and the Near East. With the conquest of Rome, the vegetables reached the north of the continent. At that time it was cultivated as a medicinal herb in monastery gardens. It has been an integral part of Mediterranean cuisine since the 19th century. This plant is considered historical and cultural heritage of the people of Europe.

Planting information
Sow Fennel root in small boxes from the end of February to the end of May at the latest and plant outdoors at an average ambient temperature of 10°C. Seedling cultivation is recommended in unfavorable locations with many snails. Snails love little fennel sprouts!
Be careful of the sensitive roots when planting out. Mounding, even watering and temperatures are important to get compact quality tubers.
Many nutrients and minerals in the soil also make the tubers more tender. Cultivation in a greenhouse is only recommended over the winter with sufficient ventilation.
Small seedlings can withstand temperatures down to -4°C for a short time, large plants with tuber development would start to rot at these temperatures.

Ingredients
The tuber contains many vitamins A, K, E, folic acid and beta-carotene. It also contains minerals such as potassium, calcium, magnesium and manganese. Its high content of vitamin C and iron is particularly worth mentioning: fennel has almost twice as much vitamin C as oranges.
