Tips to reduce water use

We recommend mulching the beds.
Experience has shown that covering the ground with hay or straw can reduce evaporation by 80%. Keeping the beds evenly moist will create an optimal moist microclimate under the mulch. This not only helps the plants to grow, but also reduces the water consumption enormously. On our farm we only water every 2-3 days and irrigate a 200 m2 cultivation area in the Algarve in Portugal with 500l of water. Our beds are always moist, which promotes plant growth and crop quality.

It is also advisable to keep the beds moist at all times.
Even if the bed is not used for a certain period of time. Drying out the soil causes a huge reduction in the micro- and macro-organisms in the soil, resulting in an infertile soil.
Tests have shown that the addition of water to the entire bed is lower over a longer period of time than if it is only poured selectively. Due to the small volume of the poured areas, as opposed to the large dry volume, they dry out faster than if the entire volume of the bed were filled with moisture.
Similar to heating in an apartment.

Maintaining an energy level always requires less energy than having to reach this level again and again.

The Leek Fantic is a biennial cultivated onion and medicinal plant. It descends from field garlic [allium ampeloprasum], which is native to the Mediterranean region, where it was known and used more than 2000 years before our era. This variety grows evenly, is hardy and is a less susceptible variety with dark green foliage and good peelability. The taste is full-bodied and strong.

Planting information
In areas with mild winters, leeks are sown in autumn when temperatures drop by 20-25°C, from September to October. In more northerly cooler areas, sow at identical temperatures in spring from April to June.
Usually leeks are sown in rows, like radishes. In order to use the potential of each individual plant, we recommend pre-cultivation in small boxes with subsequent pricking out or letting them grow in the breeding boxes. The plants are ready to plant when they have reached a height of 20cm. As a tip, if plants are preferred without pricking out, the plants are shortened by 1/3 at the roots and the tips of the leaves before planting out, this stimulates the growth of the plants. Then plant as usual at plant spacing.
This variety prefers a sunny location with sufficient water and nutritious, humus-rich soil.
For a longer harvest period, care should be taken not to injure the heart when harvesting. Leeks prefer cooler and humid climates.
