In a world where industrial agriculture with a small, standardized range of products dominates the diets of entire countries, many of our traditional and regional plant varieties are being forgotten and are therefore in danger of disappearing forever.
Traditional varieties are our living cultural heritage, a genetic diversity and a treasure trove of flavor, history, and healthy ingredients. By preserving their genetic diversity, we strengthen the resilience of our agriculture and protect biodiversity. Every saved variety is a building block for a sustainable and future-proof diet. But without active care and support, they will quietly disappear over time.
However, the preservation of traditional vegetables and medicinal plants requires considerable commitment—lengthy research, conservation breeding and propagation, sufficient cultivation areas and materials, professional know-how, as well as time and discipline. Even sharing our knowledge and information about the development of our cultural heritage free of charge is hardly feasible in our modern world without financial resources.
