Information on germination
At Benjis Seeds, we know that horticultural success depends on the quality of the seed. Therefore, high germination rate is a foundation we pay particular attention to. To ensure plants thrive and thrive, we use time-honored, nature-appropriate breeding methods developed by our ancestors, which have resulted in our current sustainable crop. This allows us to preserve our diversity of stable and healthy plants, which have a lasting impact on our livelihood.
In addition to using natural breeding methods, our seeds undergo rigorous quality controls and plant health tests to ensure they have an above-average germination rate.
We focus on fresh harvests, careful cleaning, and gentle storage so that every seed can develop its full potential. This results in fewer crop failures, consistent plant growth, and more efficient use of resources such as water, soil, and time.
Are seeds 100% germinable?
The seeds produced by a plant are generally not all viable. Naturally, there are species where we can be happy with a germination rate of 60%. Only a few species achieve a rate above 90%; some even germinate better after storage. Generally speaking, if the seeds have too high a metabolic activity during storage, their germination capacity decreases. For this reason, optimal storage conditions must always be maintained to ensure the best possible germination rate.
Germination quality and other tips
The seed will develop depending on the conditions under which the mother plant grew. To ensure high germination, we and our partner seed breeders take particular care to harvest only seeds from plants that have grown particularly healthy, vigorous, and with their own specific characteristics. Quality, not quantity. Only conscious and careful handling preserves the valuable genes in the varieties that give us a sustainable and diverse future.
To maintain our high germination capacity and successfully germinate seeds at home, the following tips will help you:
Due to the variety of factors that determine seed germination, failures can certainly occur. However, there are always reasons for this. To help you understand the causes, we've listed some possible causes here:
- Seeds are too old
- Improper storage
- Sowing was not carried out under the correct conditions
- Mechanical damage
Patience works wonders
Due to the many different requirements of each species, germination can take varying amounts of time. If something doesn't germinate immediately, it may be due to the specific germination time of the species. We've listed the germination times in our variety descriptions and on the seed packet to give you an overview of the different varieties. Often, the seeds simply need a little more time due to unknown delays.
