Tips to reduce water requirements

We recommend mulching the beds
Experience has shown that by covering the floor with hay or straw, evaporation can be reduced by 80%. If you keep the beds evenly moist, an optimal humid microclimate will be created under the mulch. This not only promotes the growth of plants, but also enormously reduces water consumption. On our farm we only water every 2-3 days and irrigate a 200 m2 cultivation area in the Algarve in Portugal with 500l of water. Our beds are always moist, which promotes plant growth and harvest quality.

It is also advisable to keep the beds moist at all times, even if the bed is not used for a certain period of time
The desiccation of the soil leads to a huge decline in micro-and macro-organisms in the soil, resulting in a barren soil over time. Tests have shown that the water content in the entire bed with full-scale irrigation remains longer than if watering is only carried out selectively. Due to the small volume of the poured surfaces, in contrast to the large dry volume, they dry out faster than if the entire volume of the bed is filled with moisture. Similar to heating in an apartment.

Maintaining an energy level always requires less energy than having to achieve it again and again.

The Batavia salad 'American browner' is an ancient annual, hardy vegetable crop for year-round cultivation from the United States.
This robust and fast-growing salad variety is also suitable as a lettuce cultivation and shows safe yields in warm and cooler temperatures. The delicious salad forms an upright rosette and is very shot-proof. The robust and fast-growing variety of lettuce has delicate, wavy and pale green leaves inside, turning brown to the outer leaf margin. The taste is sweet and mild with a crisp leaf structure. The variety can be harvested over a long period of time.

Subtropic climate (Mediterranean) (e. g. B. Portugal, Spain, Italy)
Sow directly into the open from January to May or in autumn from September to December. We recommend pre-cultivation in small bowls from January to April or in autumn from September to December.

Moderate climate (e. g. B. Germany, Switzerland, Poland)
Sow directly into the frost-free open air from February to July. We recommend pre-cultivation in small bowls from February to July.

For the 'American browner' variety, we recommend dense no-till rows as a lettuce cultivation or a pre-culture. In the pre-culture, let the seedlings grow in a small bowl to the first visible lettuce leaves, then pik into the desired container. After peckering, let the seedlings grow at moderate temperatures until they are planted out as seedlings. The planting of the seedlings in the bed is carried out from the 2nd Pair of leaves after the cotyledders.
Batavia lettuce plants prefer a sunny to semi-shaded location with a moist, humus-rich and slightly loamy soil. Avoid waterlogging.

Additional tips
For a long harvest period, harvest 1/4 of the leaves from the outside to the inside, taking care not to damage the heart to keep growth stable. In order to quickly obtain a fine, crumbly and well-drained soil, an additional incorporation of biochar and primeval rock flour is recommended.

Type of propagation
Spread occurs via seeds.

Care Plants
A loosened soil and planting in mixed culture is sufficient for lettuce.

Germination ability of seeds: 3-4 years
