Tips to reduce water use

We recommend mulching the beds.
Experience has shown that covering the ground with hay or straw can reduce evaporation by 80%. Keeping the beds evenly moist will create an optimal moist microclimate under the mulch. This not only helps the plants to grow, but also reduces the water consumption enormously. On our farm we only water every 2-3 days and irrigate a 200 m2 cultivation area in the Algarve in Portugal with 500l of water. Our beds are always moist, which promotes plant growth and crop quality.

It is also advisable to keep the beds moist at all times.
Even if the bed is not used for a certain period of time. Drying out the soil causes a huge reduction in the micro- and macro-organisms in the soil, resulting in an infertile soil.
Tests have shown that the addition of water to the entire bed is lower over a longer period of time than if it is only poured selectively. Due to the small volume of the poured areas, as opposed to the large dry volume, they dry out faster than if the entire volume of the bed were filled with moisture.
Similar to heating in an apartment.

Maintaining an energy level always requires less energy than having to reach this level again and again.

This type of mugwort is an annual medicinal plant and originally comes from China where it is called Qing Hao. This special medicinal herb has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for around 2,000 years and became known again in Europe in 1970 due to its reputation and the active ingredient artemisinin. This type of mugwort has been popular since the 4th century AD and has shown healing effects on malaria and other feverish diseases. In addition, it is considered a wound-healing, hemostatic agent and is used for skin diseases. The robust plant grows wild along paths and along rivers mainly in China, Europe and North America. The finely feathered, dark green leaves exude an aromatic scent and contain the part of the plant that contains the most active ingredients. The taste is very bitter. The fast-growing and adaptable plant develops its own strong defense against insects and diseases, which makes it attractive in mixed cultivation. Easily propagates via self-sowing.

Subtropical climate (Mediterranean) (e.g. Portugal, Spain, Italy)
Sow directly outdoors from February to September.

Temperate climate (e.g. Germany, Switzerland, Poland)
Sow directly outdoors from mid-May to June. We recommend waiting for the ice saints before direct sowing. Pre-cultivation in small pots from April to June is also possible. The plants are separated into the bed when they reach a height of approx. 8cm.

Seed emergence can take up to 3 weeks. As medium-feeders, mugwort plants only need a moderate supply of nutrients, which is sufficient through a prepared bed. Additional fertilization is then not necessary.
It prefers a location in full sun with permeable, rather dry, sandy, nutrient-rich and humus-rich soil. Avoid waterlogging.

Extra tips
An additional incorporation of biochar and primary rock powder into the soil is recommended in order to obtain a fine, crumbly and permeable soil.

Type of propagation
The flowers are only pollinated by the wind. It spreads via seeds.

Plant care
During hot periods, watering is necessary to maintain growth. Due to the initially slow growth of the plants, we recommend weeding surrounding herbs regularly.

Germination ability of seeds: 10-40 years
