Tips to reduce water use

We recommend mulching the beds.
Experience has shown that covering the ground with hay or straw can reduce evaporation by 80%. Keeping the beds evenly moist will create an optimal moist microclimate under the mulch. This not only helps the plants to grow, but also reduces the water consumption enormously. On our farm we only water every 2-3 days and irrigate a 200 m2 cultivation area in the Algarve in Portugal with 500l of water. Our beds are always moist, which promotes plant growth and crop quality.

It is also advisable to keep the beds moist at all times.
Even if the bed is not used for a certain period of time. Drying out the soil causes a huge reduction in the micro- and macro-organisms in the soil, resulting in an infertile soil.
Tests have shown that the addition of water to the entire bed is lower over a longer period of time than if it is only poured selectively. Due to the small volume of the poured areas, as opposed to the large dry volume, they dry out faster than if the entire volume of the bed were filled with moisture.
Similar to heating in an apartment.

Maintaining an energy level always requires less energy than having to reach this level again and again.

The romaine lettuce 'Forellenschuss' is an old, historic, annual leaf vegetable from Austria in the 19th century. This decorative and little-known variety is now only cultivated by a few seed breeders. This popular crisp midrib romaine lettuce forms large, open heads with elongated, ovate, green and red-flecked leaves. The stable, tender and crunchy structure of the leaves tastes sweet, similar to iceberg lettuce. A very pretty specialty for growing in the cooler season. Very bolt-resistant selection with a long harvest window. For spring and autumn cultivation.

Subtropical climate (Mediterranean) (e.g. Portugal, Spain, Italy)
Sow directly outdoors from January to April or in autumn from September to December. We recommend pre-cultivation in small bowls from January to April or in autumn from September to December.

Temperate climate (e.g. Germany, Switzerland, Poland)
Sow directly into frost-free open ground from February to July. We recommend pre-cultivation in small bowls from February to July.

We always recommend pre-cultivating lettuce. To do this, let the seedlings grow in a small bowl up to the first visible lettuce leaves, then prick out into the desired container. After pricking out, allow the seedlings to grow at moderate temperatures until they are planted out as seedlings. The seedlings are planted in the bed from the 2nd pair of leaves after the cotyledons.
Lettuce plants prefer a sunny to partially shaded location with moist, humus-rich and slightly loamy soil. Avoid waterlogging.

Extra tips
For a long harvest period, harvest 1/4 of the leaves from the outside in and be careful not to damage the heart to keep growth stable. In order to quickly obtain a fine, crumbly and permeable soil, we recommend additional incorporation of biochar and primary rock powder.

Type of propagation
It spreads via seeds.

Plant care
A loosened soil and planting in mixed culture is sufficient for lettuce.
