Seed Potatoes

Historic seed potatoes – robust, regional and rare table potatoes for traditional, characterful dishes. The cultivated potato originates from the Andes of South America, where it has been grown for thousands of years by Indigenous communities and preserved in great diversity. Through early trade routes it reached Europe, where numerous regional landraces developed over the centuries, adapting to different soils, altitudes and climate zones. Their diversity ranges from small, elongated or round‑oval tubers to light, dark or coloured skins with distinctive flavours and textures.

Within this broad group, different culinary types have become established – from firm‑cooking varieties for roasts, salads and pan dishes to flourier types for purées, soups and oven dishes.

Potatoes thrive particularly reliably in temperate climates, but – depending on the variety – can also be grown successfully in warmer regions. In most temperate and warm‑temperate zones they find stable conditions, with early varieties planted later in cooler regions and heat‑tolerant types allowing a second summer planting in southern climates. Ideal for gardens, raised beds, containers and sunny fields. Planting typically takes place from spring to summer, depending on variety and regional climate zone, by setting the tubers.
