Tips & Reviews

'Maravilla De Verano' Batavia Lettuce – historic summer variety with large red‑green heads.

This variety is a heat‑tolerant Batavia lettuce with large, open heads composed of light‑green inner leaves and reddish outer leaves. It offers a mild‑sweet, refreshing flavor and grows quickly and vigorously. Suitable for open field, greenhouse, and container cultivation. Bolt‑resistant, high‑yielding, and true‑to‑seed – perfect for self‑sufficiency and organic gardening.

  Origin & History

Maravilla de Verano is an open‑pollinated Batavia lettuce, originally developed in Spain to meet the specific demands of summer cultivation. By the mid‑20th century the variety had already spread and became known for its ability to form stable heads even under high temperatures, without bolting prematurely. The breeding goal was a broad‑leaved, open Batavia type with a light‑green heart and reddish‑tinted outer leaves, combining a mild‑sweet flavor with robust growth.

In Spain, Maravilla de Verano quickly established itself as a preferred choice for summer and autumn production. From there it spread to France and Italy, where Batavia lettuces have long been appreciated, and the variety found its place in both commercial and home gardening. Its capacity to remain in the field for extended periods without losing quality gave it an exceptionally long harvest window. Maravilla de Verano is regarded as one of the classic Batavia varieties, bridging the transition from regional selections to a widely cultivated European type. To this day it serves as a historic reference variety for heat‑tolerant Batavia lettuce and has secured a lasting position among traditional lettuce cultivars thanks to its open‑pollinated nature and resilience.

  Appearance & Characteristics

The plant grows in a rosette form and reaches a height of about 25 cm. It develops large, open heads with slightly curled, crisp leaves and shows strong resistance to bolting. Tolerates brief frosts down to around -2 °C.

Leaf details:

  • Size: Large, with leaves about 15-20 cm long

  • Shape: Slightly curled, arranged in a rosette, forming open heads

  • Color: Light‑green inner leaves, reddish outer leaves

  • Texture: Crisp and juicy

  • Flavor: Mild‑sweet and fresh

 Usage & Cultivation Highlights

The leaves are excellent for fresh use in salads, wraps, bowls, and sandwiches. Their mild‑sweet flavor and crisp texture make them a true classic of summer cuisine. They also serve perfectly as a side dish with grilled meat or fish, fit well in burgers and tacos, and add a pleasant sweetness to fresh salad mixes. Equally suitable as a garnish for soups and appetizers, they bring freshness to Mediterranean dishes such as pasta or risotto. In smoothies or juices they provide a vitamin‑rich component, and in modern cuisine they are used in creative bowls, sushi rolls, or as a crunchy base for vegetarian and vegan dishes.

Thanks to its heat tolerance and bolting resistance, Maravilla de Verano thrives reliably in open field, greenhouse, and even container cultivation. It grows quickly, forms large, open heads, and impresses with ease of care and adaptability to different sites. Even under high temperatures it delivers stable yields. Uniform head formation simplifies harvesting and makes the variety ideal for organic production. It also performs well on lighter soils, is suitable for staggered sowings, and thus enables continuous harvests over many weeks. Its heads remain fresh and storable for a long time, which makes it particularly attractive for self‑sufficiency. Since the outer leaves regrow, it can be harvested multiple times – a benefit that extends its use and makes Maravilla de Verano a reliable companion for summer and autumn cultivation.

Compared to other Batavia lettuce varieties, Maravilla de Verano is especially heat‑tolerant and bolt‑resistant – ideal for anyone who values open‑pollinated Batavia lettuce with dependable growth and a mild‑sweet flavor.
