Beschreibung

Anbau & Eigenschaften

Potato Black Hungarian – a very rare, heat‑tolerant regional landrace from Hungary.

A robust, mid‑early potato variety with long‑oval, medium‑sized tubers, blue‑violet skin, white flesh and a mild, creamy flavour. It grows compactly, is easy to care for and is ideal for open ground as well as large containers. Versatile in use as an excellent jacket and boiling potato, high‑yielding and vegetatively propagable – perfect for self‑sufficiency and organic cultivation.

  Origin & History

The potato variety Black Hungarian is a regionally distributed landrace from today’s Hungarian growing area. It has been cultivated for several decades in Hungary and neighbouring regions and has established itself there as a characterful table potato. The variety is distinguished by its deep dark violet skin and its firm, pale yellow to white flesh, which remains stable when cooked and has a mild, earthy flavour. Botanically, it belongs to the cultivated potato Solanum tuberosum, part of the nightshade family (Solanaceae), subfamily Solanoideae, and the genus Solanum.

Black Hungarian is a traditionally passed‑on regional table potato without formal registration or a clearly documented historical first mention. Its present significance is based on continuous preservation within small‑scale farming structures and on the care of rarity collectors who maintain the distinctive character of intensely coloured potato varieties. Thanks to its striking dark skin and reliable yields, it has become established in Central Europe as an independent regional variety increasingly grown in gardens and small farms that value diversity and special heritage types.

  Appearance & Characteristics

Black Hungarian grows vigorously and upright with robust, dark green leaves, forming a compact and vigorous potato plant. Depending on location, it reaches a height of around 50–60 cm and shows a stable, resilient structure typical of regional table potatoes from Central Europe. The variety develops underground stolons, at the ends of which the characteristic, intensely coloured tubers form.

Tuber details:

  • Size: Medium‑sized, usually 5–8 cm in diameter

  • Shape: Rounded to oval, evenly formed

  • Color: Deep dark violet‑black skin; flesh pale yellow to white

  • Texture: Firm, stable when cooked, finely structured

  • Flavor: Mild‑earthy, creamy, balanced, slightly nutty

  • Cooking type: Predominantly firm‑cooking
  • Maturity: Approx. 90–110 days

 Usage & Cultivation Highlights

The tubers of the potato Black Hungarian are excellent as a versatile table potato with a mild‑earthy, creamy and slightly nutty aroma. Thanks to their predominantly firm‑cooking texture, they remain stable when cooked and develop a balanced, aromatic note when fried, roasted or braised. The variety is ideal for classic potato dishes, baked potatoes, pan dishes and visually striking side dishes. Its pale yellow to white flesh forms an appealing contrast to the deep dark, flavourful skin, making it attractive for modern cuisine, creative recipes and regional specialities. When dried or stored cool, the tubers keep well for a long time and retain their quality.

Thanks to its robust growth and good adaptability, Black Hungarian grows reliably in open ground, simple polytunnels and large containers. The variety is easy to care for, requires only one fertilisation at planting and delivers stable yields with consistent watering. Loose, humus‑rich to sandy soils support tuber formation, while the plants tolerate temporary dry periods well. It shows solid resistance to typical potato diseases and is therefore particularly suitable for organic cultivation, self‑sufficiency gardens, raised beds and diverse mixed plantings.

Compared with other table potatoes, Black Hungarian is uncomplicated and robust to grow, reliably high‑yielding and versatile in the kitchen. Its firm‑cooking texture, mild‑earthy flavour and striking dark skin make it a characterful variety for anyone wishing to cultivate a hardy, colour‑intensive potato with a regional heritage.

Anbauschwierigkeit:

Easy
In subtropical climates, plant from February to September in full sun.
In temperate regions, plant from April to June after frost, in full sun.
Planting in deep, well‑drained, humus‑rich to sandy loam – place tubers 8–12 cm deep. Spacing: 30 × 40 cm.

Anbau Tipps:

For an early harvest, pre‑sprout at 10–15 °C in darkness – 2–4 weeks before planting.
Plant only in mild day and night temperatures – ideally after the last frosts.
Keep evenly moist – drought stress reduces tuber formation and yield.
After emergence, regular earthing‑up promotes tuber formation and reduces greening.
Keep evenly moist during tuber formation – avoid waterlogging.
Biochar and rock dust improve soil structure and enhance the retention of nutrients and water.

Lagerhinweise:

Store seed potatoes at 3–5 °C in darkness, dry conditions and good ventilation; avoid light, frost and moisture so they do not sprout prematurely or rot.
