Cultivation & Characteristics

Tips & Reviews

The Thomas Laxton pith pea is a middle early, very old and historic English pea variety from 1898. It is hardy, reliable and has green 7 to 12 cm long pods with 6 to 8 green very sweet tasting kernels. The strain was bred by William Laxton over a hundred years ago and named after his father, Thomas Laxton.
This pith pea, is one of the legumes and therefore one of the oldest cultivated plants. It can be proven that the first cultivation took place in the Near East and in eastern Greece around 8,000 years ago. The wild forms are of oriental origin. The original forms are the Mediterranean-West Asian fox and a fish.
