Corn
Corn originates from the warm regions of Central and South America, where early forms emerged from wild grasses and were cultivated and refined by Indigenous cultures. Through trade routes it later reached Europe and other world regions, where numerous types developed over time. Its diversity includes sweet corn, flint corn, popcorn, flour corn and further regional forms that differ in kernel structure, colour and use. The colour spectrum ranges from yellow and gold to white, red, blue and multicoloured variants.
In subtropical climates, corn thrives particularly well during the warm seasons, benefiting from long growing periods and high temperatures. In temperate regions, many of our traditional and historically preserved open‑pollinated varieties also perform reliably, as some types mature well even in shorter summers and produce well‑filled cobs. Corn shows strong ecological adaptability and can grow successfully in many climate zones when sown at the right time.
