Cucumbers
Cucumbers originate from the subtropical regions of South Asia, where they were domesticated from wild cucurbit species several thousand years ago. Through the Mediterranean they reached Europe, where they were gradually adapted to different climatic zones. Diversity of cucumbers in shapes and colours is considerable: yellow, brown and white varieties as well as cylindrical, wedge‑shaped, club‑shaped or spherical types reflect the original breadth of this crop.
In subtropical climates, cucumbers can be grown twice a year thanks to their origins — once in spring and again in summer. Many of our traditional and historically preserved open‑pollinated varieties also thrive reliably in temperate regions when planted early and given sufficient warmth. Cucumbers are adaptable crops that can be cultivated successfully across a wide range of climates.
