Peppers & Chilies
Peppers and chilies originate from the tropical and subtropical regions of Central and South America, where they developed from wild Capsicum species and were domesticated by early cultures. Through trade routes they reached Europe, where they were adapted over centuries to different climates. The diversity within this group is remarkable not only in flavour: mild, sweet pepper types, aromatic and spicy hot peppers, and very hot chilies appear in countless colours and shapes – from blocky, elongated and pointed forms to spherical or strongly ribbed varieties, in shades from yellow, orange and red to chocolate‑brown.
In subtropical climates, peppers, chilies and hot peppers benefit from long, warm growing seasons and can be cultivated over an extended period. In temperate regions, many traditional and historically preserved open‑pollinated varieties thrive reliably when started early and planted out in warm, sheltered locations. This makes Capsicum species adaptable crops that can be successfully grown in a wide range of climates.
