'Sweet Dumpling' Pumpkin – sweet‑nutty, aromatic mini squash with tender, creamy flesh.

A warmth‑loving, robust squash plant with 200–400 g, round‑ribbed, cream‑coloured and dark green striped fruits. Its sweet‑nutty, slightly chestnut‑like flesh is tender, creamy and highly versatile in the kitchen. The plants grow vigorously, semi‑vining to far‑creeping, reliably producing 8–12 small fruits per plant and performing excellently in sunny open‑field locations, raised beds and sheltered plots. Open‑pollinated, reliable in fruit set and ideal for self‑sufficiency, direct marketing and ecological cultivation.

 

  Origin & History

‘Sweet Dumpling’ was selected in the 1970s by the Sakata Seed Corporation (Japan) from small‑fruited, sweet‑fleshed Cucurbita pepo landraces. The variety was first described and introduced internationally in 1976 and has since become one of the best‑known mini squashes worldwide. The name “Sweet Dumpling” combines “Sweet” for its distinctly sweet, nutty flavour and “Dumpling” for the small, round‑ribbed, dumpling‑like shape of the fruits. The variety is aromatic, early‑maturing and features an edible skin and characteristic striping.

As a representative of Cucurbita pepo, ‘Sweet Dumpling’ belongs to the large group of North American domesticated squashes, whose origins lie in North and Central America. Classic Japanese selection combines traditional traits – sweet, fine‑textured flesh and good storability – with a compact fruit size ideal for single portions and direct marketing.
