Cucumbers
Cucumbers develop many different shapes and come in green, yellow, brown and white. They come from the warm, humid and subtropical to tropical regions of Africa and India. Cucumbers belong to the pumpkin family [Cucurbitaceae] and are related in the genus to other species such as the horned cucumber [Cucumis metuliferus] or the small spiny gherkin [Cucumis anguria]. The juicy varieties come in a wide variety of shapes, from cylindrical, wedge-shaped, club-shaped and spherical cucumbers. They are very popular in the kitchen and are eaten raw or cooked and are traditionally preserved in preserving jars with spices.
Cucumber plants love warmth and are sensitive to stress caused by drought, high heat and temperature fluctuations. As a rule, the cucumbers in temperate climate zones are pre-cultivated from April and then planted out in the greenhouse or outdoors, depending on the location. In subtropical climates, the seeds are pre-cultivated in March or earlier under protected conditions, but they also thrive outdoors in warm temperatures of 15°C and above and can be sown directly.
