The mullein is a very old two-year medicinal plant native to southern Europe, Russia and Siberia. Already in ancient times and by Hippocrates it was recognized as a medicinal plant and used for wounds or respiratory diseases. It grows impressively and forms a rosette of leaves covering the ground in the first year. In the second year she develops the beautiful and majestic yellow inflorescences, which grow up to two meters high and are popular with all kinds of insects. The species sows itself and establishes itself permanently in suitable locations. The flowers contain many mucous substances and saponins and are therefore a good relaxing expectorant for colds in the form of tea.

General
Seeds need an 8 week cold exposure that can be achieved by artificial stratification. No-till sown is unfavorable due to the possible drying out or carrying away of small animals such as ants. Therefore, pre-cultivation makes more sense. Sow the seeds in small bowls or pots and simply plant seedlings or pre-cultivated plants in pots with enough space directly into the open air.
Mullein prefers a fully sunny and warm location with permeable, slightly dry, sandy to gravelly, calcareous and loamy soil.

Additional tips
In order to quickly obtain a fine, crumbly and well-drained soil, an additional incorporation of biochar and primeval rock flour is recommended.

Type of propagation
Spread occurs via seeds or through root cuttings.

Care Plants
No care or fertilization needed.
