Description

Cultivation & Characteristics

'Dourga' Eggplant – little-known white rarity with remarkable robustness.

This variety is a robust eggplant with exceptionally white fruits and a mild-sweet, aromatic flavor. It ripens mid-early and is ideally suited for greenhouses, protected outdoor beds, and pot cultivation. More cold-tolerant than other eggplants, high-yielding, and open-pollinated – perfect for self-sufficiency and ecological gardening.

  Origin & History

'Dourga' - very old, open-pollinated white eggplant with exceptional color and remarkable robustness. The exact origin of this unique variety remains obscure, though it is believed to come from France. Its special traits point to a long history of cultivation. Highly valued is its rare cold tolerance in temperate climates - a feature that clearly distinguishes it from most other eggplants. It can even withstand short cold nights, making it a symbol of adaptability and resilience.

Characteristic is its pure white coloration of both skin and flesh - an unusual appearance at the time, which quickly made it a horticultural curiosity. The mild-sweet, aromatic fruits were once appreciated in many regions and continue to make 'Dourga' a distinctive, traditional, and freely accessible variety.

For many decades, the variety was preserved and passed on by seed initiatives and conservation organizations. Yet it largely fell into obscurity as modern hybrid varieties dominated the market and displaced traditional lines. Only through the commitment of ecological seed initiatives was it rediscovered and reintroduced. Today it is considered a historical rarity, still little known but increasingly appreciated again.

  Appearance & Characteristics

The plant grows compact and upright, reaching about 80 cm in height and bearing strong, dark-green foliage. It produces numerous fruit clusters and stands out for its uniform development.

Fruit details:

  • Size: Medium to large, usually 250-300 g, with individual fruits reaching up to 600 g

  • Shape: Elongated, approx. 20 cm long

  • Color: Pure white, both skin and flesh

  • Texture: Firm and juicy

  • Flavor: Mild-sweet and aromatic - versatile in use

 Usage & Cultivation Highlights

The fruits are excellent for fresh consumption, cooking, frying, grilling, and especially for stuffing. Their mild-sweet, aromatic flavor and extraordinary white color make them a true eye-catcher in vegetable dishes, adding a distinctive visual and culinary touch.

Thanks to its compact growth and resilience, 'Dourga' thrives reliably in greenhouses, protected outdoor beds, and pots. It is easy to care for, produces abundant fruits, and delivers stable yields even in changeable weather. It convinces with uniform fruit development and continuous harvests. Its cold tolerance makes it particularly suitable for cooler regions. The plants are sturdy, resistant to most diseases, and therefore well-suited for beginners. With high flowering capacity and numerous fruit sets, it remains compact and decorative – a culinary as well as visual enrichment for balconies and home gardens.

Compared to other eggplants, 'Dourga' is cold-tolerant, especially robust, and decorative – ideal for those who value open-pollinated eggplants with rare traits and exceptional appearance.

Cultivation guide for

<tc>Dourga</tc>

Growing difficulty:

Easy
In subtropical climates, pre-cultivation is possible from January - transplant outdoors from March in full sun, once day and night temperatures remain consistently above 15 °C.
In temperate regions, start indoors from March – transplant outdoors in full sun from mid-May after the last frost.
Sow in deep, well-drained, humus-rich and nutrient-rich loamy soil - 0.5-1 cm deep. Plant spacing: 50 × 70 cm.

Cultivation tips:

Eggplants are heat-loving and thrive only at temperatures above 20 °C.
At temperatures below 15 °C, plant growth slows significantly - cold stress can inhibit development.
In temperate climates, a rain cover is recommended – a simple roof or plastic tunnel is sufficient.
Bring pots indoors or into the greenhouse in autumn – this way the season can be significantly extended.
Consistent watering enhances fruit quality and promotes healthy plant growth.
Regular harvesting encourages new fruit set and increases overall yield.
Biochar and rock dust improve soil structure and enhance the retention of nutrients and water.

Storage instructions:

Store seeds in a cool, dry, dark, and airtight environment to maximize shelf life and germination.

Lettuce, Lamb’s lettuce, Spinach, Bean, Carrot, Radish varieties, Onion, Garlic, Basil, Oregano, Marjoram, Thyme, Calendula, Tagetes

Incompatible plants:

Fennel, Cucumber, Zucchini, Tomato, Pepper / Chili pepper, Pea, Celery, Potato

Crop rotation guidelines:

Do not plant after other nightshades – a minimum crop rotation interval of 3 years is recommended.
Repeated cultivation at the same site increases disease pressure, leads to nutrient depletion, and impairs soil structure.
Ideal previous crops include legumes, onions, root vegetables, and green manure – rotating crops supports healthy soil.
Crop rotation with low-nutrient-demanding plants is recommended to prevent soil fatigue and maintain healthy growing conditions.
Plan a green manure crop between heavy-feeding plants and this tomato variety to restore soil fertility.
Avoid planting directly after heavy-feeding crops – allow the soil to recover and replenish nutrients first.

Harvest time:

Summer, Autumn

Sowing to harvest:

5-6 months

Harvested parts:

Fruits
